Sustainable PNG – Three basic pillars

ACTIVE COMMUNITY

Paavo Nurmi Games keeps children and young people in the region active regardless of age, gender, ethnic background or income level and also provides young athletes with a springboard to international competitions. The PNG community wants to lower the threshold for children and young people to start a new hobby and also provides financial assistance to help young athletics continue their sports career.

FAIR ATHLETICS

Paavo Nurmi Games promotes fair sports culture at the international level (transparent decision-making, equality, human rights, and clean sports) and promotes opportunities for all groups to participate in athletics at the national level. PNG publicly opposes doping.

A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

Paavo Nurmi Games makes choices that minimise the environmental impacts of the event. Increasing environmental awareness – especially regarding clean water, the status of the Baltic Sea and the possibilities of the circular economy – are the focus of our activities. We and the City of Turku will be carbon neutral in 2029. We also offer our partners the opportunity to present their own sustainable choices at the event.

In summer 2021, we will focus on reducing the amount of combustible waste at the event in collaboration with our partner Remeo. During the event, trained volunteers will help the audience sort waste at recycling points in the area.

Together we can make the event even more environmentally friendly. This is how you can make an impact:

SUSTAINABLE PAAVO NURMI GAMES

Paavo Nurmi Games & Festival are organised in a sustainable manner with respect for the environment. We want to be a pioneer in sustainable athletics events – boldly testing new operating methods and highlighting the latest Finnish competence. The sustainability theme is at the very heart of Paavo Nurmi Games activities. Using successful examples, we want to promote sustainable development throughout the sports community and encourage our community towards more sustainable actions! Our sustainability also extends to promoting well-being in the entire sports community, and we’re constantly developing our social responsibility functions.

Paavo Nurmi Games has been a certified EcoCompass event since 2017, and we’re developing the event’s environmental responsibility programme in cooperation with EcoCompass. We monitor the development of environmental responsibility procedures and fulfilment of the EcoCompass certificate criteria via audits performed every third year. The most recent audit of the Paavo Nurmi Games event was completed in 2020.

BIKE PARKING AREAS

Did you know that more than 90% of Turku residents live within a 30-minute bicycle ride of the city centre? It’s a good idea to cycle to the event and leave your bike in the bike parking areas near the entrances. Public transport is also a convenient way to get to the stadium, so leave your car at home if possible.

REMEO RECYCLING POINTS

We offer a clean and environmentally friendly festival setting in cooperation with our sorting guides and Remeo. Please remember to recycle your waste. The event area has four recycling points, where our sorting guides help the audience recycle waste produced at the event.

WATER POINTS

Bring an empty water bottle – you can fill it up during the event! Turun Vesihuolto Oy provides the audience with fresh water at two different water dispensing points in the area. One of the water points is located behind the main stand and the other is near the backstretch.

FOOD AND DRINK

Our local food suppliers offer the audience the opportunity to purchase locally produced and delicious competition snacks. Vegetarian options are also available. Did you know that Paavo Nurmi was a vegetarian in his youth? Food and drink are served in biodegradable dishes, so please recycle your dishes in the biowaste container!
